I looked back at him.
“I was done the moment your hand touched her,” I said.
Then I opened the doors.
The hallway outside felt too bright.

Maya did not cry until we reached the elevator.
Then her face folded.

I crouched and pulled her into me.
She wrapped both arms around my neck.
“Was I bad?” she whispered.

He went silent.

I almost laughed.

I heard it.

He said my name again.
I hung up.

On Monday, I walked into the board meeting with a folder under my arm.

The board chair cleared his throat.
Julian tried to speak first.
I raised one hand.
